In “Drumming Up Dialogue: The Dialogic Philosophies of Martin Buber, Fred Iklé, and William Ury Compared and Applied to the Babukusu Community of Kenya” (published by iUniverse), author Patrick Wanakuta Baraza analyzes three theories of conflict management from the perspectives of Martin Buber, Fred Iklé and William Ury to promote ideas of peace throughout humanity.

“If, as they say, we all come out of Africa,” reasons Baraza. “Then somewhere in Kenya’s Rift Valley we first learned to live as human beings, and we quickly learned to quarrel too.”

“Drumming Up Dialogue” compares and contrasts the thinking of three leading writers on the subject of conflict management to the actions of the Bukusu community located in Kenya. From the perspective of a philosopher Martin Buber, political scientist Fred Iklé and cultural anthropologist William Ury, Baraza offers several solutions to conflicts in the Bukusu community where cultures and opposing factions often clash.

Baraza’s conclusions on finding peaceful revolutions can also be applied to any conflicting community worldwide. His goal is to promote understanding between different cultures and beliefs by opening lines of communication and understanding. “While the goal of debate is winning,” he says, “The goal of dialogue is learning.”
