Patty Doss Shares Experience With Infant Type 1 Diabetes in New Book
VAN BUREN, Ark. (PRWEB) June 11, 2014 -- “Statistically speaking, I’ve never diagnosed a diabetic child to a diabetic parent.” The doctor assumed these words would ease author Patty Doss and her husband’s fears as their infant son, David, struggled to hang onto life.
At nine months old, David was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Doss depicts the challenges and victories she and her family faced in her enlightening new book, “Sweet Dreams: (A Momma’s Story of Infant Diabetes Type 1 and Beyond)” (published by WestBow Press).
Local hospitals told Doss and her husband, also a Type 1 diabetic, that they were “not set up to handle infant diabetes Type 1,” so David received treatment at a Tulsa, Oklahoma, hospital. “Sweet Dreams” chronicles Doss’ experiences as a diabetes caregiver to her son, her husband and eventually her father, sharing lessons of endurance and patience. The book also delves into the subject of finding a cure for diabetes and what Doss calls “the mindset of what appears to be ‘profit over cure’” in America.
“While diabetes’ role in this story appears to be the enemy (and rightfully so), the true villain is that silent killer known as greed,” Doss says. “This country’s ideology of diseases being profitable is sick and the time for a cure for diabetes is nigh, but first greed will have to be taken out of the equation. In the meantime, it’s survival of the fittest.”
