Hartford Personal Injury Attorney Joe Morelli Comments on AARP Report about Pedestrian Safety in Connecticut
Hartford, CT (PRWEB) June 09, 2014 -- Commenting on an AARP study ranking Connecticut 27th in pedestrian safety and Hartford 38th out of the nation’s 51 largest metro areas, Hartford personal injury lawyer Joe Morelli of the Law Offices of Mark E. Salomone & Morelli said today it’s imperative for drivers to exercise more caution on state roadways to reduce the risk of pedestrian accidents.
Morelli based his comments on a May 20 New Haven Register report, “Connecticut 27th nationwide in pedestrian safety.” The article detailed a study released by the AARP’s National Complete Streets Coalition evaluating pedestrian safety across the nation’s major metropolitan areas and risk factors for pedestrian accidents.
“During the past decade, more than 350 pedestrians lost their lives in Connecticut, according to this report,” Morelli said. “At the Law Offices of Mark E. Salomone & Morelli, we firmly believe that’s 350 too many pedestrian accidents. As this study shows, there is definite room for improvement among Connecticut drivers. We must all remember to drive safely when pedestrians are nearby. Slow down and avoid driving distracted or while under the influence of alcohol.”
According to the New Haven Register, AARP’s report is titled “Dangerous by Design” and indicates older adults and children to be at highest risk in pedestrian accidents, with pedestrian injury the third-leading cause of death by unintentional injury for children 15 and younger across the United States.
The New Haven Register reports many pedestrian accidents are attributed to dangerous roadways that lack safety provisions for pedestrians, bicyclists and public transit users. According to the report, Connecticut state legislature recently signed into law a vulnerable user bill increasing penalties on reckless drivers who injure or kill pedestrians on state roadways.
“Reducing the number of pedestrian fatalities is critically important in Connecticut,” Morelli said. “Some streets are more dangerous than others. Unfortunately, some drivers are more dangerous than others. That’s why it’s so important to educate our drivers and enforce traffic laws designed to keep pedestrians safe from harm.
“We urge all drivers and pedestrians to safely and responsibly share the road with one another. However, if you’re a pedestrian injured by a negligent driver, you have options. Do not hesitate to contact a personal injury attorney in Hartford today,” Morelli said.
