San Antonio Pedestrian Accident Lawyer at The Herrera Law Firm Comments on Safety Report
San Antonio, TX (PRWEB) June 13, 2014 -- Commenting on a recent article ranking San Antonio as the 18th most dangerous city for pedestrians in the United States, San Antonio pedestrian accident lawyer Jorge Herrera of The Herrera Law Firm, said today it’s imperative for drivers to safely share the road with pedestrians on city streets which may not be suited for heavy pedestrian traffic.
Herrera based his remarks on a Fox 29 news article, “Are streets dangerous by design?” published May 20. The article cited data from the National Complete Streets Coalition’s “Dangerous by Design” study revealing over 300 fatal pedestrian accidents occurred between 2003 and 2013. Herrera said the study’s findings make San Antonio one of the most dangerous cities in the United States for pedestrians.
“It’s no secret that pedestrians are at a disadvantage when sharing the road with cars and large trucks,” Herrera said. “When coupled with a lack of sidewalks and poorly marked pedestrian crossings, the dangers pedestrians face when simply taking a trip to the corner store are much greater than they should be. This startling data should serve as a call to action for city officials to improve pedestrian safety across San Antonio. Drivers especially need to be cautious when pedestrians are nearby.”
The Fox 29 article said that close to 47,000 pedestrians were killed between 2003 and 2012. The National Complete Streets Coalition report examined where pedestrians are killed most often, who is most at risk, and what can be done to prevent pedestrian accidents.
According to a May 22 Texas Public Radio news article, “The Source: Pedestrian Deaths Raise Questions of Street Safety,” the National Complete Streets Coalition’s “Dangerous by Design 2014” report ranked San Antonio as the 18th most dangerous city for pedestrians. The article said older neighborhoods lacking sidewalks, and the lack of bicycle lanes across the city, contribute to the problem.
