West Palm Beach Car Accident Attorney David J. Glatthorn Comments on News Article about Declining Pedestrian Fatality Rates in Florida
West Palm Beach, FL (PRWEB) April 05, 2014 -- Commenting on findings that the number of pedestrian accident fatalities have declined in Florida in 2013 compared to the previous year, West Palm Beach auto accident attorney David J. Glatthorn said he welcomes the news, but added that further driver and pedestrian education is necessary to prevent future accidents involving motor vehicles and pedestrians.
Glatthorn based his comments on a March 5, 2014, news release issued by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA). The release indicated pedestrian accident fatalities to have declined nationwide in 2013, particularly in the state of Florida. Glatthorn said that the trend is encouraging, but more work must be done to reduce pedestrian fatalities in Florida.
“Our firm has handled many cases where pedestrians have been injured by careless or negligent drivers,” Glatthorn said. “Pedestrian accidents have long been a problem in highly populated areas such as South Florida. The state is one of the most dangerous in terms of pedestrian injuries and fatalities. While any reduction in fatalities is good news, it’s imperative for drivers and pedestrians alike to work together to make for even safer roads.”
According to the GHSA press release, 190 fewer pedestrian fatalities were reported nationwide between January and June 2013 compared to the same time period in 2012. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated a 4 percent nationwide drop in total motor vehicle deaths.
The Governors Highway Safety Administration press release noted that Florida recorded 55 fewer pedestrian accident fatalities in 2013 than in 2012, the largest single-state drop recorded over the two-year time span. Florida ranked third in total pedestrian accident fatalities in 2012, according to the release.
“Florida has successfully implemented safety programs to educate pedestrians,” Glatthorn said. “The state also enforces traffic laws designed to increase pedestrian safety. Despite these efforts, drunk, distracted and reckless drivers continue to be a problem. Pedestrians face an exponentially high risk of injury or death when struck by a careless driver. Pedestrians who believe they’ve been injured as a result of a driver’s negligent or careless behavior have rights. Those who have been injured in a pedestrian accident, or whose loved ones were killed, should contact an attorney immediately.”
