EAST SETAUKET, N.Y., Oct. 13, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The newest Courtyard Marriott Hotel in Rostov-on-Don, Russia welcomed their first guests in October 2020. PENETRON ADMIX was used to ensure permanent waterproofing of the hotel's below-grade concrete structures.
Located on the Don River only 30 miles (50 km) from the Sea of Azov, Rostov-on-Don is the administrative center of the Rostov oblast in southwestern Russia. With a population of just over 1 million people, the city is an important manufacturing center and key maritime port for Russia.
"Because the Courtyard Marriott Hotel is walking distance from the Rostov Arena, this project was initially scheduled to open in time for the 2018 FIFA World Cup," explains Igor Chernogolov, President of Penetron Russia. "However, the hotel's design plans changed, and the start of construction was delayed."
Building with High Groundwater
The Courtyard Marriott Hotels, part of Marriott International, are a mid-priced range of hotels primarily targeting business travelers but also accommodating leisure travelers and families. The Courtyard Marriott Hotel in Rostov-on-Don offers 198 rooms, a bistro restaurant and bar, a swimming pool, and fitness center. As of last month, there were 1,254 Courtyard Marriott Hotels worldwide, with over 250 more hotels in the pipeline.
The construction site is located between the southern banks of the Don River and the Grebnoy Canal. The contractor asked Penetron Russia for an effective solution to counter the high groundwater levels.

Achieving Permanent Protection for Concrete
PENETRON ADMIX was added to the concrete mix during the batching phase. The treated concrete was used to waterproof all the hotel's below-grade structures, including the foundation slab, retaining walls, and the underground parking garage.
The active ingredients in PENETRON ADMIX react to moisture to form an insoluble crystal network deep within the concrete matrix. As an integral part of the concrete matrix, it provides permanent protection against deterioration caused by water penetration and the resulting corrosion of the reinforcement steel bars.
