Essential New Per Wickstrom Blog Post Reveals 5 Enduring yet Dangerous Myths about Alcoholics
(PRWEB) December 10, 2013 -- Per Wickstrom, the founder of Best Drug Rehabilitation and principal writer of his popular website http://www.PerWickstrom.com, has written an essential new blog post that reveals 5 enduring – and extremely dangerous – myths about alcoholics.
“Alcoholism in this country is not merely a problem – it’s an epidemic,” commented Per Wickstrom, who struggled to overcome alcohol and drug addiction issues in his youth. “There are an estimated 12 million alcoholics in the US, and 140 million around the world. What’s more, it’s estimated that 1 in 10 children has a parent who is an alcoholic. Clearly we have to do something to put a big dent in these shocking numbers, and revealing the enduring – yet dangerous – myths about alcoholism can certainly make a difference.”
According to Per Wickstrom, these 5 myths are:
Myth #1: “Alcohol is not as addictive as cocaine, heroin or other drugs.”
The truth is that alcohol is very addictive, and one of the toughest addictions to kick, especially for those who have been drinking for extended periods of time.
Myth #2: “Alcohol doesn’t kill like other drugs.”
The truth is that alcohol is flat-out deadly. Each year in this country, there are upwards of 100,000 alcohol-related deaths that result from traffic fatalities, alcohol poisoning, accidental drowning, and more.
Myth #3: “It’s relatively safe to drink while using prescription drugs.”
The truth is that mixing alcohol with prescription drugs – or even with non-prescription drugs – can be a recipe for disaster, and potentially fatal. Unfortunately, this message isn’t getting through as more and more young people are attempting to enhance or increase their ‘buzz’ by adding alcohol.
Myth #4: “The only rehabilitation that works for alcoholics is the 12 Step (Alcoholics Anonymous) program.”
The truth is that while this program has helped many people break free of their alcohol addiction, there are numerous other programs that are just as helpful.
Myth #5: “You can always tell when someone is an alcoholic.”
The truth is that many people can appear to function normally, yet be under the influence of alcohol – or even `over the limit’ as far as the law is concerned.
“The bottom line is that alcoholism doesn’t discriminate,” added Per Wickstrom. “It targets the young, old, rich, poor…and the list goes on. In my experience, the best way to address alcoholism is to design a program that is uniquely designed for each person, which is an option that makes the chance for long-term success much more likely.”
