Peter Marino Honored by Chanel for New Flagship Design in New York City
Chanel hosted a cocktail at the 57th Street boutique followed by a dinner at the nearby Marino-designed Lobster Club.
NEW YORK, Jan. 23, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- On January 16th Architect Peter Marino was honored by Chanel, celebrating his new design for the 57th Street boutique, Chanel's largest in the US to date at 14,000 sq ft.
At the fete hosted by Chanel last Wednesday, Marino mingled with guests throughout the boutique along with French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel, in from Paris for the event. Marino and Othoniel have been collaborating since 2004 and Othoniel created a show-stopping focal point: a dramatic sculpture of an entwined necklace that cascades down the center of the four-story central staircase, dazzling visitors upon entering the first floor. Specially commissioned, the impressive 60-foot tall sculpture evokes a strand of timeless pearls, a nod to the pearl necklaces so dear to Mademoiselle Chanel. A stunning piece crafted in mirrored stainless steel and gilded glass beads, it appears as though magically suspended from the ceiling, visually drawing the eye upwards to the top of the boutique.
The New York City flagship seamlessly extends the brand's presence from the inside out with a striking glass façade covering six stories; the interior retail space has been expanded from three to five floors. Notably marked by its graphic exterior composed of white printed glass panels framed by a thin black metal grid, Marino's design for the façade exudes the spirit of CHANEL referencing the brand's color palette while presenting an abstraction of its emblematic tweed.
Guests transitioned to the nearby Lobster Club for dinner, also designed by Marino and located in the historic Seagram Building. Responsible for the architectural and interior design, Peter Marino conceived The Lobster Club as an art-infused, colorful, playful counterpoint to The Pool and The Grill upstairs. Original artworks, staff uniforms, custom textiles, tabletop design, and brand identity were also developed by Marino, from his Manhattan studio.
