PetPace Smart Collar Monitors Fever Remotely and Noninvasively for a Dog with Lyme Disease

The case study, available for download here, documents in detail how the PetPace collar provided remote, noninvasive fever monitoring for a two-year-old Doberman Pinscher with Lyme disease.
Lyme disease is a common but potentially life-threatening infection, caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium that is transmitted by ticks. Though most affected dogs respond favorably to antibiotic treatment, some may develop potentially fatal kidney failure. Close monitoring of vitals, including temperature and activity, is important in the first days of treatment to ensure positive response to treatment and detect potential complications.
Following initiation of antibiotic treatment, the patient, named Shana, was sent home with a PetPace collar to monitor her vital signs. The PetPace collar enabled caretakers to remotely and noninvasively monitor her core body temperature on a minute-by-minute basis, and showed that she did not develop a fever while at home (see graph below). In addition, PetPace measured Shana’s activity level, which showed improvement, and other physiological attributes including pulse rate, respiratory rate, and Heart Rate Variability (HRV). All Shana’s vitals remained stable throughout the monitoring period, correlating with the clinical assessment of a positive response to treatment.
As Shana’s case demonstrates, PetPace’s wearable technology allows, for the first time in veterinary medicine, continuous, remote, noninvasive and reliable monitoring of patient core body temperature. This improves patient care in the hospital setting or at home, while freeing both pets and caretakers from the need for frequent and unpleasant rectal measurements. Since temperature data collection is done noninvasively, temperature can be monitored continuously, providing early detection of fever - an essential pet health indicator.
