Just eight days remain until the 1st Annual Convenient Healthcare and Pharmacy Collaborative for retail healthcare providers begins in Kissimmee, Fla. The two-day conference that starts Thursday, August 6 will focus on ways pharmacists, nurse practitioners and physician assistants can work together to expand access to affordable, high quality healthcare.
The unique program provides continuing education sessions addressing gaps in professional education for clinical and pharmacist learners and best practices for interdisciplinary collaboration in the retail health practice setting. It is sponsored by the Convenient Care Association, based in Philadelphia, and Pharmacy Times of Plainsboro, N.J., both leaders in educational programming and best practices for the delivery of high quality healthcare services by retail health professionals.

“With All Best Intentions … Can Public Policy Drive Information Flow and Innovation in Healthcare?” will be the topic of keynote speaker Dan Haley on Day 1 of the conference. He is vice president of government and regulatory affairs and general counsel for athenahealth, based in Watertown, Mass. On Day 2, the second keynote speaker, Hansen-Turton will talk about “The Collaborative Environment of Convenient Care.”
“We are offering 10 clinical sessions approved for continuing education credits for nurse practitioners, physician assistants and pharmacists,” said Dave Heckard, vice president of education for Pharmacy Times Office of Continuing Professional Education. “The sessions will address some of the more common diseases that are treated and/or managed in the retail setting, as well as collaborative disease management and treatment for chronic diseases.”
Educational sessions will address patient management from the clinician and pharmacist perspectives and discuss the management of chronic conditions such as diabetes, respiratory disease and obesity, as well as acute conditions frequently seen in the retail setting. Pharmacists, NPs and physician assistants can each earn up to 10 contact hours of continuing education in their fields. Accreditation comes from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the Physician Assistant Review Panel.
Retail clinics, also known as convenient care clinics, have rapidly expanded in the last 15 years to more than 1,900 in the nation. They provide a valuable service to patients by offering affordable and high-quality basic primary healthcare at convenient locations outside of the traditional doctor’s office. Clinicians within this setting, including nurse practitioners, physician assistants and pharmacists, are highly trained and skilled professionals who can offer services ranging from primary, preventive care to the management of some chronic illnesses.
