Phthalic anhydride (PA) is a derivative of phthalic acid, which is obtained from the oxidation of o-Xylene or naphthalene. A stringent supply of naphthalene has arisen due to the decreasing coke consumption (that resulted in low naphthalene and coal tar production). On the other hand, the increasing availability of o-Xylene from refineries has led to the switch to o-Xylene feed stock. PA is manufactured in two forms: flakes and in the molten state. PA finds its main application in the plasticization of poly vinyl chloride (PVC) due to its ability to provide flexibility and strength to the compound. In paints and coatings, alkyd resins produced from anhydrides, such as PA and polyols are used to fix the curing time of the coating applied.

The European region is the second-largest market in terms of consumption after Asia-Pacific. The region has potential for the product due to an increasing demand for its end-use products. However, with mounting focus on environmental as well occupational safety, the use of phthalic anhydride in its end-user applications is being restricted and even banned. In some cases, phthalic anhydride is also being replaced by suitable substitutes. Thus, the demand for anhydride is estimated to grow at a slower pace in the European and North American markets during the forecast period.
