Pine Sawfly Outbreak Ravages Front Range: Pine Lane Nursery in Parker, CO Issues Alert to Garden Center Customers
Parker, CO (PRWEB) August 27, 2014 -- An outbreak of pine sawflies may be coming to a pine tree near you! Pine Lane Nursery, a family-owned garden center in Parker, CO, issued the following alert to their customers and homeowners the Denver metro area.
The pine sawfly is a tree pest that affects many pine tree species (most notably ponderosa pine trees) by feeding on their needles. When sawfly larvae (which look like caterpillars) eat the pine needles, they heavily defoliate the pine tree. While it’s not considered fatal to the tree, it strips the tree of its aesthetic quality and highlights the massive swarms of pine sawfly left - hardly the landscaping look that any homeowner wants.
This latest pine sawfly epidemic has hit the areas of El Paso County, Elbert County, and Douglas County the most in Colorado. Due to the size of the pine sawfly issue, experts with the Colorado State Forest Service and USDA Forest Service are actively monitoring the outbreak.
Angie and Kurt Hughes, owners of Pine Lane Nursery in Parker, CO, understand the impact the pine sawfly can have on local landscapes and are working to inform and educate their customers on the issue. While the timing for direct control measures such as insecticides for the most heavily hit has passed with the Spring, Pine Lane Nursery notes that some areas just beginning to see the effects on their pine trees can have a fighting chance by using chemical insecticides.
Pine Lane Nursery is a family owned, full service garden center in business since 1983. They offer an extensive inventory including fast growing trees, shrubs, and bushes from the tree farms they buy from in Oregon, Idaho, Missouri and Colorado; beautiful annual and perennial plants (such as hibiscus) for landscaping and container gardening; seasonal veggies for vegetable gardens, and much more.
