LOMBARD, Ill., May 25, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Manufacturers, retailers and businesses are taking a cue from one of nature's hardest workers when it comes to considering an eco-and budget friendly alternative in packaging materials. Inspired by bees, some paper companies offer a strong "honeycomb" product to protect customers' items in transit.
Nicole DeJoris, president of the Lombard, Illinois-based Pinnacle Packaging, is finding this type of protective packaging material to be popular with her customers.
"Many of my clients already have, or are expressing interest in, replacing foam padding with honeycomb, a paper-based product engineered to be strong, durable, and a cost-effective answer to providing superior protection that is lightweight and recyclable," she explained.
This packaging alternative is comprised of paper that is made into a series of hexagonal cells sandwiched between sheets of paper to hold them in place and also add to its overall strength.
DeJoris pointed out that one of her clients is on track to replace 50 percent of their foam protective packaging with honeycomb. "Its versatility, strength, and shock-absorption qualities, together with the fact that it costs roughly a third of what foam costs, makes it an attractive choice," she said.
On the eco-friendly front, honeycomb products are easy for consumers to recycle as they already know what to do with paper products, and it doesn't require any recycling education. That is an essential factor as the Harris Poll, on behalf of The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), "reveals two-thirds (66%) of Americans agree that 'If a product is not easy/convenient for me to recycle, I probably would not recycle it.'"
Honeycomb comes in a variety of sizes and densities. It can be die-cut to provide a custom fit and is shockingly strong, able to be used as edge and corner protectors with strapping and as pallets and pallet runners that support a great deal of weight.
As the European Manufacturers Paper Honeycomb Association (PMPHA) points out, honeycomb has the highest strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratio as a sandwich core while having a "low impact on the environment and society."
DeJoris summed it up, saying, "While honeycomb has been around for a long time, it's gaining popularity together with the "less is more" trend in packaging."
