Polar Bear Week draws attention to shrinking sea ice
Churchill, Manitoba (PRWEB) October 31, 2014 -- Images of polar bears will be lighting up screens across the world November 2 – 8, 2014 for Polar Bear Week. The event, intended to celebrate the majestic polar bear and raise awareness about the impacts of climate change on polar bear habitat, coincides with the fall polar bear migration to Churchill, Manitoba.Polar Bears International (PBI), explore.org and Frontiers North Adventures have teamed up to allow people around the world to watch the migration live through polar bear cams placed on Frontiers North’s Tundra Buggies® roving the sub-arctic tundra.
Churchill, Manitoba, is dubbed the “Polar Bear Capital of the World” and the non-stop live coverage of the migration will help measure the health of the delicate ecosystem, which has deteriorated drastically over the last decades. As part of Polar Bear Week, PBI will air a series of special webcasts live from the tundra, reaching audiences worldwide. This year’s topics include: Tracking Polar Bears in Hudson Bay; Polar Bear Week, and a Google Hangout with polar bear Scientists.
“The theme for the 2014 event is Take the next step!” said Krista Wright, Executive Director of Polar Bears International. “We are encouraging everyone to sign PBI’s Petition for Polar Bears, which urges world leaders to take meaningful action on climate change at the upcoming climate change talks in Lima and Paris.”
The Take the next step! campaign includes a video and photo challenge unified by the hashtag #SaveOurSeaIce. Submissions will be featured in a special gallery on the PBI website. Individuals, schools, and businesses are encouraged to commit to reducing their greenhouse gas footprints by pledging to energy-saving actions that take what they’re already doing a few steps further.
The live HD video streams kicked off October 27, 2014 and deliver the action from multiple cameras and multiple locations as captured on Tundra Buggies. Anyone with a connected phone, computer, TV or tablet can watch live during daylight hours at http://www.explore.org/polarbears with blog highlights available at http://blog.explore.org/tag/arctic/.
Last year the polar bear migration attracted millions of viewers and since it began has streamed over 10 million hours of content to people in 179 countries. All partners have pledged not to profit from the footage.
