A recent article from Business Standard released on July 3rd and written by Jaclyn Trop, discusses how Detroit is embracing new automobile technologies. The article says that Detroit is “suddenly hungry for software developers and information technology specialist who can create applications for the next generation of connected vehicles.” Trop adds GM has recently quadrupled their information technology staff to create apps for the new 2014 models. Ford also has plans for 300 positions in information technology this year.
The article goes on to say, “For Detroit, the hiring is a rare bright spot in a city teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.”
Michael Eichinger, Vice President and COO of Bay Fastening Systems, a pop rivet distributor, is excited by the developments. “New technology in cars has the ability to radically change the driver’s experience. It also creates job opportunities for app developers in Detroit and around the country.”
According to the article, GM’s 2014 models will include many in-car apps. Trop gives an example of an app which would allow drivers to “interact with their vehicles both from inside and remotely” or track and monitor their fuel efficiency.
According to Trop, over the next three to five years, GM plans to hire around 4,400 workers for its information technology centers in the Detroit suburbs. “It will be the fastest-growing employee group within the nation’s largest automaker.”
