More Than 12,700 People Sign Petition to Ban Power Morcellator Surgery, Bernstein Liebhard LLP Reports
New York, NY (PRWEB) July 17, 2014 -- A nationwide plea to ban power morcellator (http://www.gynecaremorcellatorlawsuit.com/) surgery has taken hold in the U.S., with more than 12,700 signatures now included on a petition inspired by a woman whose uterine cancer allegedly spread because of the device, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports.
As of July 17th, a total of 12,749 people had signed the Change.org petition, which was created by the husband of a Boston woman who is currently living with stage four uterine leiomyosarcoma she claims to have been spread via a fibroid removal procedure she underwent last October. The couple’s petition seeks to ban the use of power morcellators from gynecological surgeries in the U.S., in light of concerns that they may promote the dissemination of uterine cancer cells throughout the peritoneal cavity.*

Morcellator Lawsuits
The issues surrounding power morcellator use have garnered national attention recently, especially after a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alert in April that warned of their possible association with the spread of uterine sarcoma and other cancers.
According to the FDA, approximately 1 in every 350 women undergoing fibroid removal surgeries have uterine sarcoma cancer cells that may not have been diagnosed prior to surgery. Uterine sarcoma is almost never discovered until after fibroids have been biopsied, and may ultimately decrease a woman’s chances of long-term survival, the alert states.
Most recently, the FDA’s Obstetrics and Gynecology Devices Panel met to discuss the possible dangers of uterine morcellation at a two-day meeting on July 10th and 11th. More than a dozen women and their families delivered emotional testimonies at the meeting, according to a Boston Globe report, that spoke of cancer-related deaths that allegedly resulted from uterine morcellation. After hearing these testimonies, several of the 15 panelists agreed that the devices should be banned from gynecological surgeries, while others disagreed that they should be removed from the market. All the advisors did agree in the end that women should sign a consent form indicating that they understand the risks of power morcellator surgery, after being fully made aware of safety issues by their doctors.**
