New York, NY (PRWEB) August 15, 2014
More than 62,800 signatures are now included on a petition created by a Boston couple campaigning to end power morcellator (http://www.gynecaremorcellatorlawsuit.com/ ) surgery in the U.S., Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports.
As of August 15th, the Change.org petition had 62,927 supporters who similarly seek to ban use of the devices in laparoscopic hysterectomy and fibroid removal procedures. The campaign was spearheaded by the husband of a woman who was diagnosed with uterine leiomyosarcoma, a life-threatening form of uterine cancer, after having fibroids removed in October 2013. Since then, concerns surrounding the possible risk for uterine morcellation procedures to promote the spread of uterine cancer cells throughout the peritoneal cavity have continued to gain momentum in the U.S.
“We are pleased that more signatures have been added to this petition, as our Firm continues to hear from women whose uterine sarcoma and other cancers allegedly spread after power morcellator surgeries,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is actively investigating power morcellator lawsuits on behalf of women who may have received life-threatening cancer diagnoses after undergoing a uterine morcellation procedure.
The possible risks surrounding uterine morcellation have continued to gain media attention over the past several months, especially after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public health alert in April that warned of the association between power morcellators and the spread of uterine sarcoma and other cancers. Among other things, the FDA alert estimated that 1 in every 350 women having fibroids removed may have undetected uterine sarcoma or another cancer prior to surgery, which may not be discovered until after fibroids are removed and biopsied.
Most recently, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that 1 in 368 women undergoing power morcellator surgeries may have undiagnosed uterine cancers. The research, which was released on July 22nd, 2014, also showed a higher likelihood of undetected cancer in women older than 65, and found that 32 percent of morcellation patients with the undiagnosed disease were younger than 50.*
On July 30th, Johnson & Johnson announced that it would be removing all power morcellators marketed by its subsidiary, Ethicon, Inc. from the market following its previous decision to cease sales of the devices. A notice posted on the company’s website indicated that its Gynecare Morcellex, Gynecare X-Tract and Morcellex Sigma morcellator systems would be withdrawn due to uncertain risks associated with their use.**
Women who may have been diagnosed with uterine cancer after power morcellator surgery may be eligible to file a lawsuit seeking compensation for damages allegedly caused by the device.
