More Than 3,000 People to Attend The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's Walk - PurpleStride Detroit 2013 on September 29th
Detroit, MI (PRWEB) September 18, 2013 -- More than 3,000 people will run and walk to raise funds and awareness about pancreatic cancer, the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States, at PurpleStride Detroit 2013 on September 29, 2013 at the Detroit Zoo.
The event will benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, the national organization creating hope in a comprehensive way through research, patient support, community outreach and advocacy for a cure. The event will include music and family friendly festivities throughout the day. Registration begins at 7:30 am and the event begins at 9:00am. To register, visit http://www.purplestride.org/detroit.
“PurpleStride Detroit is meant as a day of hope and inspiration for people who have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer as well as a tribute to people who have passed away from this terrible disease,” said Marcie Levey, Event Coordinator for the Detroit Affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network . “We are honored to have Honorary Co-Chairs from three top medical institutions in the community; Robert P. Jury, M.D. of Beaumont Health System, Philip A. Philip, M.D., PhD of Karmanos Cancer Institute and Dianne M. Simeone, M.D. of University of Michigan. We will be joining tens of thousands of people across the country who are taking part in more than 50 PurpleStride events this year and are proud to share one common goal – to end pancreatic cancer.”
Pancreatic cancer has one of the lowest survival rates of all major cancers - 73 percent die within one year of diagnosis and the five-year survival rate is just six percent. A recent report indicates that pancreatic cancer is anticipated to move from the fourth to the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States by 2020, and possibly as early as 2015. This devastating disease has claimed the lives of many public figures including Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, actor Patrick Swayze, physicist and first American woman in space, Sally Ride, Nobel Prize winner Dr. Ralph Steinman, Carnegie Mellon University Professor Dr. Randy Pausch, actor Michael Landon, and opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti.
