On May 21, 2014, Eugeria Radio welcomed Pam Haron into the studio to discuss her experience as a certified heart failure nurse and what she does to educate the patients and families effected by it.
As a certified nurse, Haron spent much of her career in a hospital setting and a decent portion of that was spent in the cardiac unit. She gained years of hands on experience and became very knowledgeable on cardiac diseases and heart failure, and during that time found that many patients and their families misunderstood the cause and effects of the illness. She saw the need for clarification on the subject.
During her interview, Haron took a moment to explain the difference between cardiac disease and heart failure. A common result of cardiac disease is a heart attack, which is “an episode where the arteries are blocked and because of that enough blood flow cannot get to that muscle causing a portion of the muscle to die,” explained Haron. Instead of a specific disease, heart failure is an encompassing syndrome where the heart cannot fill or pump efficiently.
Haron spends her time educating patients that have suffered from a cardiac disease or heart failure. She actively promotes cardiac rehab to help strengthen the heart, explaining that the holistic approach includes a combination of exercise, diet, keeping blood pressure down, and taking medications.
