Reading Eggs: Review Examines Popular Online Learning to Read Program
West Palm Beach, FL (PRWEB) April 30, 2014 -- In recent months there has been a lot of hype around a learn to read program called Reading Eggs. Mommy blogs have given it seals of approval and users have given it glowing reviews... but does it really work? Requested Reviews' Laura O'Connor (who is also a mother of 3 young children), bought the program and had her kids take it for a spin.
Reading Eggs is developed by Blake e-Learning, a New York-based company that creates literacy programs for children between the ages of 3 and 13. The program development team is made up of educators, writers, and developers and they claim that 91 percent of parents notice an improvement in the reading ability of their children and 2,440 primary schools have used the program.
"There are 120 lessons with more than 512 interactive games, rewards, and songs in Reading Eggs created to motivate children to learn," reports O'Connor. "I like how Reading Eggs aims to engage young kids in a fun, interactive way in order to build a solid reading foundation."
"I've tried a lot of learning apps out there, and most just rely on animations and sounds to catch kids’ attention, but Reading Eggs takes it much further by making it feel like a computer game," she says. "It is its own virtual world, where earning reward eggs by doing the lessons enable a player to buy in game items and collect new critters. That's some pretty powerful motivation for young ones."
O’Connor says the program is teacher-friendly and parent-friendly. It has a reporting system that makes it easy for teachers to monitor the progress of individual students or the entire class. It allows parents or teachers to reset the progress of a student at any time.
The reading program is also well-structured. It padlocks activities so kids are forced to complete the lessons in order.
O'Connor explains that the lessons in Reading Eggs are based on the five pillars of reading that consist of phonemic awareness, vocabulary, phonics, fluency, and comprehension. Each component is necessary for students to become good readers.
In her review of the program, O’Connor mentions that parents can try the program’s sample lesson as well as a free 14-day trial so they can see if the program will work for their kids before committing to it.
Reading Eggs is priced by subscription. Parents can purchase a six-month or a year-long subscription, either of which will give them access to the entire Reading Eggs website and program.
O’Connor concludes that parents should treat Reading Eggs as an investment. "While it's an investment, in my opinion it's the best learn to read program around, my kids love it."
