Recorded Books Claims Three Wins, Including Audiobook of the Year, at 2015 Audies
Prince Frederick, MD (PRWEB) June 02, 2015 -- The Audio Publishers Association (APA) awarded Recorded Books, Inc., Tantor Media and HighBridge three wins at the 2015 Audie Awards held May 28 at the New York Academy of Medicine in New York.
MANDELA: AN AUDIO HISTORY, produced by Radio Diaries and published by HighBridge, won in both categories it was nominated—Audiobook of the Year and Best Original Work. Hosted by Desmond Tutu with commentary by Nelson Mandela and a foreword by Joe Richman, MANDELA: AN AUDIO HISTORY tells the story of the struggle against apartheid through rare sound recordings. The award-winning production has been widely recognized as one of the most comprehensive oral histories of apartheid ever produced.
For Audiobook of the Year, MANDELA: AN AUDIO HISTORY was up against four other titles, including WHAT I KNOW FOR SURE, written and narrated by Oprah Winfrey, YES PLEASE, written and narrated by Amy Poehler, Doris Kearns Goodwin’s THE BULLY PULPIT, narrated by Edward Herrmann, and Neil Gaiman’s THE GRAVEYARD BOOK, narrated by the author, Derek Jacobi and a full cast.
“What’s remarkable about this award is that MANDELA: AN AUDIO HISTORY is not really an audiobook in that it's not an audio based on a book. It is simply top-notch audio storytelling, and it shows that both audiobooks and audio storytelling in podcasts and other such formats are being consumed by the same fans. We look forward to supporting and publishing more audio storytelling—not only that based on books,” said Troy Juliar, publisher of Recorded Books, Inc.
For Best Original Work, MANDELA: AN AUDIO HISTORY was up against Sebastian Fitzek’s THE CHILD, narrated by Rupert Penry-Jones, Jack Boulter, Emilia Fox, Stephen Marcus, Robert Glenister and Andy Serkis; Adele Park’s GADZOOKS! A COMICALLY QUIRKY AUDIO BOOK, narrated by Garry Morris, Andra Harbold, Lesley Mendenhall, Abby Elvidge, Rhett Guter, Melissa Sandberg, Kent Hayes, Jack de Golia, and Steve Campbell; A.J. Hartley and David Hewson’s HAMLET, PRINCE OF DENMARK, narrated by Richard Armitage; and TRANSPARENT: BEHIND THE SCENES WITH JEFFREY TAMBOR, narrated by Jeffrey Tambor.
FURIOUS COOL was also selected for Best Nonfiction title. Published by Tantor Media, written by David and Joe Henry, and narrated by Dion Graham, FURIOUS COOL is an in-depth look at the life and career of comedian Richard Pryor. FURIOUS COOL was up against five other titles, including Atul Gawande’s BEING MORTAL, narrated by Robert Petkoff, Héctor Tobar’s DEEP DOWN DARK, narrated by Henry Leyva, Michael Lewis’ FLASH BOYS, narrated by Dylan Baker, Walter Isaacson’s THE INNOVATORS, narrated by Dennis Boutsikaris, and Alastair Bonnett’s UNRULY PLACES, narrated by Derek Perkins.
The audiobook industry’s premier awards program in the United States, the Audies recognizes distinction in audiobooks and spoken-word entertainment. Often referred to as the “Oscars of spoken-word entertainment,” the evening marks an industry-wide gathering of authors, narrators and publishers. Newbery Award–winning author and audiobook narrator Jack Gantos emceed the event, which marked the 20th Annual Audies Gala.
Recorded Books, Inc., Tantor Media and HighBridge Audio received a total of 22 nominations for the 2015 Audie Awards.
