Residence Inn San Antonio Downtown/Alamo Plaza Supports Boeing by Donating School Supplies to Students in Need
San Antonio, TX (PRWEB) September 11, 2013 -- School bells all around the country are once again beckoning children back to the classroom to learn. But to be successful, students need the proper supplies, which can be expensive. For the seventh year in a row, the Residence Inn San Antonio Downtown/Alamo Plaza supports San Antonio Marriott Business Council and Boeing San Antonio to provide school supplies to students in need.
Residence Inn employees adopted Kelly Elementary School, about 15 minutes from the hotel in downtown San Antonio and provided backpacks filled with notebooks, pens, pencils, markers, crayons, rulers, binders, paper and other school supplies to 20 second-graders at the elementary school. The backpacks and school supplies were delivered Aug. 20, 2013, with parents and students present to choose which backpack they wanted.
The school, opened in 1953 for the children of military families serving at Kelly Air Force Base, allowed civilian students to enroll in 1962. Kelly Elementary has about 267 students in prekindergarten through fifth grade. With a 17:1 student/teacher ratio, the San Antonio school provides children with an exemplary education from quality teachers and staff.
Although the hotel in downtown San Antonio is best known for its comfortable and affordable guest rooms, as well as its convenient location to the River Walk, River Central Mall, SeaWorld, Six Flags Fiesta Texas and the San Antonio Zoo, its employees enjoy giving back to the local community whenever they can. Through the drive, begun in San Antonio in 2005, Boeing and Marriott have been able to donate more than 200 backpacks to students in need. Marriott and Boeing are proud and honored to be a part of this yearly event.
“Boeing and Marriott share the same commitment to giving back to the communities we are a part of,” said Linda Caldwell, senior accountant executive at Marriott International.
No stranger to community outreach, Marriott and Boeing collected the supplies through a variety of methods. The companies donated backpacks and other supplies and also solicited from their employees. Some of the Marriott guests even donated to the drive.
“Investing in and supporting our communities is part of how we do business to address issues in the areas of education, health and human services, environment, arts and civic engagement,” said Shantel Butler, community investor for Boeing San Antonio. “Boeing has a responsibility to its stakeholders, including the communities where its employees live and work, to be a good corporate citizen and lead by example.”
