Glaucoma is an eye disease that causes loss of sight by damaging a part of the eye called the optic nerve. The damage causes vision loss in patches, most frequently one's side, or peripheral, vision. The prevalence of glaucoma increases with age. Black and Hispanic populations, as well as women in general, are also at higher risk for the disease.
