Attorney Mark W. Gemma of Gemma Law Associates, Inc., says the firm’s new website content is aimed at helping RI accident victims to avoid potentially harmful mistakes after a car wreck.

Unfortunately, we all face the possibility of getting into a car accident at some point in our lives. It could be a minor crash or one that is costly in terms of property damage or personal injury – or both.

Mark W. Gemma, an attorney who assists victims of Rhode Island car accidents, called attention today to two new pages on the Gemma Law Associates website that discuss protecting one’s rights in the aftermath of a crash.

The pages are “Five Steps to Take After a Car Accident” and “What to Expect in Your Car Accident Case.”

“Unfortunately, we all face the possibility of getting into a car accident at some point in our lives. It could be a minor crash or one that is costly in terms of property damage or personal injury – or both,” Gemma said.

“Rhode Island law allows accident victims to be made whole if another driver has injured them in a car wreck, but there are many ways a person can help or hurt their case soon after a crash,” Gemma continued. “We hope the information on our website can help people to act in their own best interest after the accident.”

Gemma Law Associates is a Rhode Island personal injury law firm that features six accident and injury lawyers, including founder Alfred Gemma and his two sons, Mark and Peter Gemma. The firm has been in practice in Providence, RI, for more than 40 years, with a major focus placed on representing motor vehicle accident victims and their families.

The firm’s “five steps” after a car accident address the physical safety of accident victims, reporting the accident to authorities and insurance companies and documenting the accident.

The “what to expect” page outlines the stages of a personal injury lawsuit, from initial consultation though developing and filing a case. The content also discusses the pre-trial process, settlement negotiations, trial, verdict, appeal and paying liens and fees with an award.

“If you receive an award in a personal injury lawsuit, you often have to pay back money you initially received for medical treatment and/or workers’ compensation,” Gemma said. “Many accident victims don’t realize that, so we explain it very early in the process.

“The aim of a personal injury lawsuit, of course, is to obtain a settlement that comfortably exceeds those payments and ensures the car accident victim’s recovery needs are fully met.”

Gemma added that the two Web pages are general outlines and not intended to serve as legal advice. He said it is important for car accident victims to discuss the specific, unique facts of their case with an experienced attorney.

“Our firm, for instance, offers free initial consultations,” Gemma said. “Our goal is to help people understand their legal rights and their options as they move forward.”
