Sam and Beatrice Gathing began their life together in December 1929 in Desoto County, Miss. They started their farm with one mule and one cow, but as their family expanded, so did their farm and their farmland.

Life in southern Mississippi was difficult during the era of the Jim Crow laws. Growing up in a climate of institutionalized discrimination, the Gathing children were seen as “just stupid black kids,” Wright recalls. Sam Gathing, always a leader with an unwavering faith in God, had to cope with harsh racism and irrational hatred toward him and his family. Throughout it all, he believed that the truth could be found in God’s words and actions, and he raised his children according to those principles.

Roberta Wright, like her sisters and brothers before her, fled the deep south of Mississippi after graduating from high school in 1962, to escape the injustice of Jim Crow laws. She also wanted to find a better life for herself and for her family. She was the 10th of Beatrice and Sam Gathing’s 14 children.
