Robert McLean’s ‘Here for a Reason’ recalls childhood experience in 1950s American South

Author Robert McLean reminisces on cold, vivid historical facts of a bygone era while offering readers an entertaining satire, shedding light on many contemporary issues in his new book, “Here for a Reason: God Don’t Make Mistakes” (published by Trafford Publishing).

An insightful recollection of memories from the South in the 1950s, “Here for a Reason” revisits McLean’s youth. He borrows from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., calling it an era when people were judged by the color of their skin and not the content of their character.

“I hope, through my book, readers come to understand people are people,” McLean says. “Before you prejudge someone, look in the mirror and fix your own problems first.”

Though his recollections are serious in nature, McLean makes a creative use of satire to expand on subjects concerning the reader, such as the vacillating climates of politics and religion.

“On one side, the memoir presents a chance to learn from the past and improve our present surroundings with an emphasis on the future,” McLean says. “On the other side, satire seeks to appeal to the reader’s imagination.”
