Are there systematic relationships between different sources of survey errors? Dr. Tourangeau discusses the research.

Roger Tourangeau, Ph.D., a Westat Vice President and Associate Director, will deliver the 27th Annual Morris Hansen Lecture to be held on Thursday, October 11, 2018, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The lecture will take place in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) Jefferson Auditorium. A small reception on USDA’s Whitten Patio will follow. The event is open to all, but attendees must preregister.

Dr. Tourangeau, the 2016-17 President of the American Association of Public Opinion Research, is well known for his methodological research on the impact of different modes of data collection and on the cognitive processes underlying survey responses. He has published more than 90 research articles, is a lead author on key books on web surveys and survey response, and is founding co-editor of the Journal of Survey Statistics and Methodology.

Dr. Tourangeau’s lecture is entitled “How Errors Cumulate: Two Examples.” He will explore:

  • How coverage, selection, and nonresponse errors in nonprobability web panels cumulate
  • Whether there is a relationship between response propensities and data quality

The Morris Hansen Lecture Series is sponsored by the Washington Statistical Society, Westat, and the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

This series was created to honor Morris Hansen, a former Westat Chairman of the Board, whose pioneering contributions to survey sampling and related statistical methods established many standards and methods, many still in use, for the conduct of surveys.
