About the Author
For fourteen of her past nineteen years in Alaska, Romey Atchley has lived with her husband, David, and two sons in the Nowitna National Wildlife Refuge, a remote natural wilderness area in the center of the state. Living two hundred miles from the nearest road, with no schools, doctors, grocery stores, or other families nearby, she has had to take care of herself and her family with no one else to depend on, which has included learning to grow a versatile garden; fish, gather, and hunt food for her family; trap animals and tan hides for clothes; home school her two sons (one of whom has already graduated); build cabins; work on engines; mill lumber; make a boat; and all kinds of other activities relating to subsistence. She has kept a daily journal of her life, for most of her time in Alaska, part of which she has turned into a memoir about moving to the wilderness and living there for her first year. She has also written poems, short stories, and songs related to her life. An avid photographer, Romey has been keeping a photo journal of nature, wildlife and her subsistence activities. Using pen and ink, she draws the woods and animals around her and has done illustrations for her book “SPRING… In Which Barefoot Meets Boofoot”. She is currently writing a second book for her “Adventures of Barefoot and Boofoot” series and working closely with her husband, who is writing his second novel as well.
