This September, West Michigan Roofing & Construction completed their most complex roofing job to date, replacing the aging metal roof of a major military and aerospace design firm. Not only did the roofing company have to design the roof to withstand 360 degree heat, but they also had to create a more energy-efficient design.

The Shellcast, Inc. facility includes large blast furnaces that melt steel for military and aerospace components. The furnaces then connect to heat stacks that protrude through the roof. These stacks often emit temperatures of 360 degrees, hot enough to melt popular commercial roofing materials.

To design a custom roofing solution for the facility, West Michigan Roofing & Construction won a competitive bidding process that required outside-the-box thinking. The roofing company then custom designed a new roof, which will still be covered by their own 20-year warranty.

Previously, the Shellcast Inc. facility featured metal roofing, but West Michigan Roofing & Construction designed a replacement using Energy Star Rated Thermoplastic Polyolefin roofing membrane, a far more environmentally and energy efficient material than metal roofing.

To protect the new roof from the furnace vents, the roofers also created a custom steel housing to surround the heat stacks and prevent damage to the newly installed TPO membrane.

“It was a pleasure working with the business owner, Bob Johnson; he’s like-minded in his ability to problem solve," said West Michigan Roofing & Construction owner Adam Megna. "Overall, the project went smooth and was completed on schedule. We’re happy to have completed this project and look forward to more custom jobs in the future.”

For more than 50 years, Shellcast, Inc. has provided investment castings, component machining, tooling design, and more services at their Montague, Michigan facility. Among other military contracts, Shellcast, Inc. makes parts for the U.S. Army's AH-64 Apache, an advanced attack helicopter.
