The problem with the traditional home router is that it just isn't powerful enough. Think of today's routers like cell phones from 10 years ago. They handle one or two core functions well, but don't have the ability or power for increased performance.

Sabai Technology is obsessed with making networking projects accessible to everyday users. Now, the company is looking to Kickstarter to fund their next generation home and small business router project, JaiRo. The company explains that the inspiration for the project stems from the frustrating limitations of the MIPS platform, which is the current industry standard.

Sabai Technology Founder and CEO, William Haynes, speaks passionately about the disparity in innovation between home computing and home networking over the past dozen years, explaining that networking has only improved incrementally, while home computing has experienced exponential growth. Sabai believes JaiRo can bridge that gap, and bring power, unity, and accessibility to home networking.

The target for the campaign is $50,000 and the funds will be used to speed the development process. While several of the rewards levels include developer hardware units, the project is focused on the software that will be capable of running on almost any x86, 64-bit device. The development schedule is ambitious, with plans for an alpha release - targeted to open source developers - by the end of the year. The startup is no stranger to tight deadlines; in the last three years the company has launched multiple product lines and is on version five of Sabai OS, its flagship product..

Networking engineer Tim Fowler explains why the open source license is critical. JaiRo is a modular platform, so the real added value for customers will come once the open source community has begun creating mods for the device. “The whole thing is built on Linux Server with LAMP stack, so there are a ton of networking projects that already exist that can be tweaked to work with JaiRo and the platform will be familiar for developers. We are just migrating these projects to a central device.”

So what are some of the modules the company has in mind? The list is constantly growing, but projects like network attached storage, printer serving, VOIP phone servers, IP camera streaming, and family filtering are already in the pipeline. Further out are wishlist items like media serving.

Sabai Technology is well known in the consumer VPN industry as the creator of the VPN Accelerator, the company’s first try at an x86 device. The VPN Accelerator, introduced in 2012, was the company’s first x86 product and is a network attached device. “It was an important product, because it showed us what a little bit of power behind the network could achieve,” explains Haynes.

So why look to Kickstarter to raise the funds? Haynes explains that finding a community of people who are excited about this project is just as important as the money, “to find networking geeks like us who see the potential of a unified network is critical.” Along with the Kickstarter campaign, which is currently running, the company has also created a community site, demo page, and developer resource for anyone interested in learning more.

Sabai Technology is a young tech company located in Simpsonville, South Carolina. The company has a reputation for great customer service and their advances in consumer VPN Routers. Often billed as the easiest to use and most powerful VPN Router firmware, Sabai OS is the company’s current flagship product. In 2012, Sabai Technology introduced the VPN Accelerator, which was it’s first foray into an x86 powered device.
