Sam Boak Grows Residential and Commercial Insulation Department to New High
Local exterior contracting firm, Boak & Sons, continues to focus on residential and commercial insulation - a core of the business since it began in 1974. With record-low temperatures impacting the Midwest during the latest polar vortex, the insulation department has been working overtime to keep pace with customer requests in Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio, Feb. 07, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- For over forty years, Sam Boak has been an expert on residential and commercial insulation. What started as the sole focus at Boak & Sons in 1974, has grown over the years to keep pace with new types of insulation and the never-ending quest for more energy efficient buildings. With the Midwest experiencing record-shattering Arctic temperatures, insulation continues to be a core skill set as the company celebrates its 45th anniversary in 2019.
Sam Boak founded Boak & Sons in 1974 while he was only a senior in high school. In his early years, Sam found himself competing against 30 insulation companies in the Valley. He worked 12 hours days to keep pace. He'd attend university classes in the morning, install insulation in the afternoon, and sell insulation in the evening.
In the 1980s, countless companies bottomed out and closed their doors as interest rates on housing reached an all-time high. This left only two insulation companies operating in the Valley, one of which was Boak & Sons. "This isn't your usual construction company." Sam said of his company, "It is not all about profit. It is about being the best in the area and doing what we do with pride. It is this mindset that allowed us to get through the difficult times and come out on top."
Sam Boak saw most of the growth within his insulation department during the housing boom in the 1990s. The company went from 8 insulation installers to 20. Boak & Sons also started to diversify from traditional fiberglass insulation to spray foam insulation products; these provide higher efficiencies to home owners. In additional to higher efficiencies, spray products also require higher skill sets from installers. Boak & Sons invested in various training to ensure their installers were up to the task and they continue to invest heavily in staff education today.
"Several of the guys working here today have been a part of the Boak & Sons' team for the past 15 to 20 years. They are seasoned professionals. This is their career; they work with great leadership and exceptional quality," Sam Boak says of his insulation department.
The North American Insulation Manufacturers Association estimates that roughly 90% of existing homes are under-insulated in the United States. During the winter season, signs of an under insulated home include chilly drafts, cold rooms, and high energy bills. With service areas experiencing the Deep Freeze of 2019, this can make life - even indoors - less than comfortable. The Boak & Sons' insulation department has been hard at work the last few weeks to keep up with requests during the polar vortex.
