Texas Attorney General Candidate Sam Houston Endorsed by Numerous Organizations
Houston, TX (PRWEB) October 15, 2014 -- Democratic candidate Sam Houston has been endorsed by a bevy of organizations in his bid for Texas Attorney General. The Houston Chronicle, Dallas Morning News, San Antonio Express and Corpus Christie Caller have all made their support for Sam Houston public this week.
“Democratic candidate Sam Houston is the best choice on the ballot,” said the Chronicle’s editorial board.
The Chronicle pointed to Houston’s 26 years as a litigator, practicing civil law at the state and federal level, and opponent Ken Paxton’s “history of lawbreaking and questionable business practices,” as reasons for its support of Houston.
The Austin American-Statesman’s editorial board was one of the earliest to support Houston, publishing their endorsement in September.
“Houston would bring a fresh eye to an office that in our estimation has strayed from its primary functions,” said the American-Statesman’s editorial board. “[Paxton’s] political track record in other areas and pending ethical questions are too significant to overlook for the position of attorney general.”
The Dallas Morning News’ editorial board took a similar stance in its support of Houston.
“Serious legal issues dogging... Paxton should rule him out for consideration to be the next attorney general of Texas. It’s fortunate for voters that there’s a solid alternative in [Houston],” said the Morning News’ editorial board. The board went on to praise Houston’s “clear-eyed view” of the attorney general’s office, exhorting voters not to invite “embarrassment for Texas” by electing someone facing felony charges in Paxton.
The San Antonio Express unambiguously supported Sam Houston, citing its own coverage of Paxton’s crimes in its endorsement.
“We strongly urge Texans to elect Democrat Sam Houston,” said the Express’s editorial board, continuing, “and we believe voters should take this blemish on Paxton’s record seriously as they consider who should be the state’s top lawyer.”
The Corpus Christie Caller-Times editorial board stated that Sam Houston would have won their endorsement, even if the Republican candidate weren’t facing criminal charges.
