The River City. The Birthplace of Rock and Roll. The BBQ Capital of the World. Memphis has almost as many nicknames as it does things to do. Visitors here will find a city with a rich culture steeped in music, food and literature. It can be overwhelming to plan out an itinerary, so Sapphire Resorts™ Group has put together this list of the top three events to catch this August.
The Rusty Wallace Racing Experience: On Aug. 8, racing fans and enthusiasts can experience an authentic NASCAR racing experience at the Memphis International Raceway. Visitors can drive or ride along in a real, current stock car for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Memphis International Raceway can boast several milestones with more than 100 National Drag Racing events and 12 years of the NASCAR events, and now visitors here can be a part of that history. Travelers can enjoy the three-quarter mile paved oval at the Memphis International Raceway like the professional drivers do. According to Sapphire Resorts™ Group, the target speed of the experience is based on individual performance.
Elvis Week: Vacationers headed to Memphis might have already planned to visit Graceland, but they should also consider booking their trip between Aug. 8 and 16 during Elvis Week. In honor of the King of Rock 'n' Roll, thousands of Elvis fans from around the world will make their annual pilgrimage to Graceland. This week is the perfect time to check out Sun Studio, where Elvis recorded his first song; visit the King’s personal booth at Arcade Restaurant; or see Elvis’ childhood neighborhood at Lauderdale Courts. While vacationers will not want to miss the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest, the Candlelight Vigil is the main event of the week and will be held Aug. 15. While Elvis' music plays in the background, fans make their way to Meditation Garden to pay their respects to the King on this very special evening.
Moon River Music Festival: The Birthplace of Rock and Roll is a wonderful place to experience a night of Americana, folk and southern rock music under the stars. Memphis’ Moon River Music Festival will feature artists such as Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors, NEEDTOBREATHE, Switchfoot, Judah & the Lion, Colony House, Cereus Bright, Myla Smith and more. The event will take place at the Levitt Shell on August 15. Besides the great lineup, Sapphire Resorts™ Group says Elvis’ lovers can experience a bit more of the King at this music festival as Levitt Shell is known as the site of Elvis Presley's first professional rock 'n' roll concert.
