Andreas Wickhoff, a Master of Wine and Export Sales Director of Premium Estates of Austria, describes the Sattlerhof Sauvignon Blanc “Südsteiermark,” as being "...a door-opener... a fresh, crisp version of the region's most important varietal"

Circo Vino, an American importer of fine wine, is pleased to introduce Weingüt Sattlerhof (http://www.sattlerhof.at) Sauvignon Blanc “Südsteiermark” 2012, from Austria to the USA. Produced within the guidelines of organic viticulture this entry level Sauvignon Blanc from the Südsteiermark region exceptionally reflects the terroir of the southeastern Austrian state known here as Styria.

Sariya Jarasviroj Brown, owner of Circo Vino says, “When educated wine drinkers think of Austria they think Grüner Veltliner or possibly Riesling but very rarely do they think of Sauvignon Blanc. Yet, one of Austria’s most prosperous and highly esteemed wine regions, South Styria (“Südsteiermark”), is dedicated to Sauvignon Blanc.”

The Sauvignon Blanc wines made in Styria are usually produced in quantities barely big enough to quench the thirst of the local aficionados, and the few bottles that do arrive in the USA often come to the market at higher than average prices. Circo Vino is pleased to introduce the new Sattlerhof Sauvignon Blanc “Südsteiremark” 2012 at a suggested retail price of $19.99, thereby making this one of the very few estate produced, 100% Sauvignon Blancs from Styria available in the USA for under twenty dollars. Jarasviroj Brown and Circo Vino will continue to import the complete range of Sattlerhof’s Sauvignon Blancs, from their flagship “STK” (Steirische Klassik) wines to much sought after single vineyard wines, “Kranacheberg” and “Sernauberg”.

Andreas Wickhoff, a Master of Wine and Export Sales Director of Premium Estates of Austria (http://www.premiumestates.at), describes the intent of creating Sattlerhof Sauvignon Blanc “Südsteiermark,” as being,” . . .a door-opener for the “STK” wine(s) and especially the single vineyards to show the different expressions of the various vineyards in one wine.” He continues, “ The winery’s goal was to develop a fresh crisp version of the region’s most important varietal with distinct characters of origin at an affordable price.”

Produced from entirely estate-grown fruit, the Sattlerhof Sauvignon Blanc “Südsteiermark” 2012 comes from a blend of the Sattler family’s vineyard sources. The vineyards sit on steep hills with elevations between 435-450 meters high. The vines benefit from hot days and cool nights, resulting in a spicy note with unmistakable fruit aromas in the wines. Winemaker Willi Sattler describes the flavor profile of his new Sauvignon Blanc “Südsteiremark” as offering a, “refreshing, delicate play of aromas reminiscent of apricot, fresh grapes, and a touch of mango,” and on the palate, “ . . . pleasant acidity, lemon peel and a juicy finish.” Despite its lower price, the “Südsteiermark” is crafted with the same attention to detail as all of Sattlerhof’s wines. All work is done by hand, with severe selection processes being brought into play to insure that only the finest grapes are used in the production of the wine. To further guarantee the wine’s purity, fermentation and aging take place entirely in stainless steel.

The “Südsteiermark” release is accompanied by the release of the first vintage of Sattlerhof “Element” a Sauvignon Blanc made by Alexander Sattler, Willi Sattler’s son. Although availability is extremely limited (a mere four cases have been allocated to the USA), Alexander’s debut wine speaks to the life elements he has synthesized, growing up in one of the best terroirs for Sauvignon Blanc and his newly gained perspective from finishing his education in Enology at Klosterneuberg, Austria’s leading wine school. Crafted from a one third hectare subplot of Sattlerhof’s most prized vineyard site Kranachberg, the combination of mica-schist and “Kreuzberg” gravel from this site imparts a distinctive minerality to the wine, while Alexander’s use of neutral oak in the fermentation process expresses his joie de vivre in a vibrant, intriguing style.
