An Insurance Investigator Provider on Long Island, The Protective Group, Comments on New Facial Scanning Tech in “The Insurance Investigation Game”
Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) August 29, 2013 -- John Monderine, CEO of The Protective Group, an insurance investigator provider on Long Island, comments on an August 21st article published by FOX News titled “DHS developing facial-scanning technology for police” which discusses how the development of this new technology can raise privacy concerns.
Biometric Optical Surveillance System (BOSS) is the name of a facial-recognition technology program that is in “early stages” said a Department of Homeland Securities official to FOX News. In time this face-scanning technology will be able to scan crowds with video surveillance equipment.
“This proposed technology has its ups and downs,” says John Monderine, CEO of The Protective Group, an insurance investigator provider on Long Island N.Y. “This program will allow corporate security easier access to information that can place certain subjects, but will that be an infringement on people’s rights to privacy?” he asks.
For years U.S. airports have had difficulty in utilizing screening procedures that were not considered invasive. Originally run under the Pentagon BOSS was funded by Congress. It is being tested “to determine its effectiveness and suitability for deployment by state and local law enforcement partners,” says the DHS official.
This program originally started as a way to detect bombers and overseas terrorists, reported the Times. The Department of Homeland Securities began testing with BOSS to explore its capabilities as a tool for U.S. police in 2010.
The DHS official said, "Testing concluded that BOSS did not meet the original requirements for the technology. The independent test showed that additional efforts are needed to have the technology meet those requirements, and if new technology is developed, assessments will continue."
