Barbados will be among 10 International Segway Polo Teams Contesting the 2013 Woz Challenge Cup
(PRWEB) July 13, 2013 -- Barbados will be among 10 international Segway Polo teams contesting the Woz Challenge Cup, the World Cup of Segway Polo in Washington DC from July 20-24, 2013. One member of the Barbados team is Founder and Managing Director of Totally Barbados, Brett Callaghan.
The four-day Woz Challenge Cup is being played at the Hotchkiss field at Gallaudet University in Washington D.C.
World champions in 2009 and 2010, the Barbadians are expected in the United States on July 19th and are being supported in their efforts to compete at the world championship by Courtesy Garage, the local agents for Nissan vehicles.
Members of the team were yesterday presented with a monetary donation and Nissan training shirts from representatives of Courtesy Garage.
Barbados, who were runners-up in California in 2011, were not able to challenge for the title in Sweden last year, missing the Cup because of financial challenges, but will be seeking to regain the world championship this year.
“We are taking a six-member team. Barbados has some good players and we are seeking to get to the finals, if not win the Cup. We will also be promoting Barbados on the tour,” said Brett Callaghan, who is also one of the founding members of the Segway Polo Club of Barbados.
Callaghan also thanked Nissan and Courtesy Garage for the assistance in helping them to attend the world championship and promised to uphold the island's proud sporting tradition.
Members of the Barbados Segway Polo squad are Nevin Roach, Brett de Gale (Team Captain), Ralf Luther, Brett Callaghan, James de Gale and Dave Eastmond.
Segway Polo, a modified version of the sport normally played on horses, is played by teams of five players on battery-powered Segways, using mallets to put the ball through opposing goals. The sport was formally established around 2004, with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak playing a key role.
Barbados hosted the 2010 Woz Challenge Cup at the Lion Castle Polo Estate in St. Thomas, with the influential Wozniak in attendance, and the Barbados Flyin' Fish won, beating Germany's Blade Pirates 3-1. Last year, the Woz Challenge Cup was hosted in Stockholm Sweden and attracted 14 clubs from nine countries.
