While other storage facilities in the northeast went weeks without power, heating, ventilation or air conditioning during hurricane Sandy, Gotham Mini Storage’s systems continued as if the hurricane never happened.

While self-storage facilities taking advantage of the various government incentives to install solar arrays is fairly common, Gotham Mini Storage in Manhattan New York City has taken things a step further with the installation of a state of the art “cogeneration” power plant.
Cogeneration (sometimes referred to as combined heat and power or “CHP”) uses excess heat from the onsite production of electricity to both heat and cool a building. Gotham Mini's self storage facility in Manhattan NYC uses advanced natural gas fed mini turbines (which are essentially small jet engines) to produce the electricity used by the facility. The excess heat released by the turbines is then captured, as opposed to discharged into the atmosphere, and used to produce hot water. This hot water is circulated throughout the building to provide heat during the winter months or fed into a chiller to create cold water for the building’s air-conditioning during the summer.
“Not only does this system dramatically reduce the amount of greenhouse producing gas emitted into the environment relative to conventional methods such as purchasing electricity from local utilities or burning oil to fire traditional boilers…” said Stephen Schwartz who is one of the owners “…but it also provides for complete self-sufficiency as all electricity is produced on site.” Jack Guttman who is also a partner in the project added that “while other storage facilities in the northeast went weeks without power, heating, ventilation or air conditioning during hurricane Sandy, Gotham Mini Storage’s systems continued as if the hurricane never happened.”
Gotham Mini Storage’s developers also installed advanced window glazing throughout the self-storage facility to further enhance the building’s efficiency. Gotham Mini Storage’s customers thus get piece of mind knowing that they’re storing in one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly self-storage facilities and are also assured of having an extremely high level of reliability and consistency with respect to the climate controlled storage and security systems that protect their belongings. Gotham Mini's self storage in NYC continues to remain one the most modern self-storage facilities in the world.
