Without paying the costs to sell via price comparison sites, customers can often obtain a better deal and lower prices when buying their insurance direct through a specialist.

In recent years price comparison websites have become hugely popular, with a growing number of consumers looking for support to ensure they are getting the best possible deal. Despite this, the survey suggests that one in four people have been disappointed with the experience and nearly three quarters of people actually prefer to buy direct.
By their very nature price comparison engines feed off the common misconception that the cost of the policy is the most important factor when buying insurance, ranking results accordingly. However when it comes to caravan insurance, the survey reveals that policy features and benefits are of equal importance to consumers, and that the level of excess and reputation of provider in fact have the most impact on people’s purchase decisions.
Despite cost savings being the main reason for using these websites, one in three people feel that they actually provide worse value for money than individual insurers, with over three quarters also finding the average policy excess to be the same price or higher when buying via a price comparison engine.
With nearly three quarters of those asked also stating that a Defaqto 5 star rating is important to them when buying caravan insurance, it’s clear that consumers are choosing quality over price and looking directly to specialist providers to find the most comprehensive policy for their needs.
Stuart Craig, Shield Total Insurance Marketing Manager, commented:
“Buying direct from a specialist allows you to tailor your policy to suit your specific requirements, and ensure the quality of the product using trusted industry awards, ratings and reviews giving added piece of mind should the unthinkable happen. Without paying the costs to sell via price comparison sites, customers can also often obtain a better deal and lower prices when buying their insurance direct through a specialist.”
The infographic also provides helpful advice around how to use price comparison websites wisely, revealing hidden tricks that most people are unaware of such as the rebrokering of personal information each time renewal approaches, leaving consumers open to receiving a new quote from every insurer.
