Renowned Eye Surgeon Dr. Shofner Shares Five Important Vision Tips For College Students
Nashville, TN (PRWEB) August 28, 2014 -- Dr. Stewart Shofner of Shofner Vision Center met with many young patients throughout the summer that recently headed off to college. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, over 22 million students will attend college or university in the U.S. this fall. Students may spend their time attending classes, studying for exams, participate in sports and other activities, which can increase their risk of eye problems.
Dr. Stewart Shofner shares five important vision tips to keep student’s eyes healthy and seeing their very best.
1) Avoid Pink Eye. It’s not just for 3rd graders and is especially contagious. Conjunctivitis (aka Pink Eye) can spread quickly in schools and dormitories. Avoid rubbing your eyes and ALWAYS wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap.
2) Avoid Eye Strain. Take regular breaks by following the 20-20-20 rule: look at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes for 20 seconds. Remember to blink regularly.
3) Avoid Sharing Cosmetics. Mascara and liquid eye-liners should be used within 3 months of opening. Sharing eye cosmetics could cause herpes keratitis. And if Pink Eye is contracted, throw away any eye cosmetics, which could contain the virus.
4) Avoid Eye Injury. Wear protective polycarbonate eye-wear while participating in physical sporting events or while riding motorcycles, skateboards, scooters, bicycles, or 4-wheelers.
5) Avoid Water While Wearing Contacts. The parasite Acanthamoeba keratitis lives in tap water and can cause eye infections. According to the Center of Disease Control, 85% of Acanthamoeba eye infections occur in contact lens wearers. We recommend removing your contact lens before you shower or swim.
Additionally, for those wearing contact lens, it’s imperative to properly clean and store lenses to avoid eye infections. Sight threatening infections from contact lens use occur in 1 in 2,000 contact lens wearers. This is why so many patients opt for LASIK vision correction surgery, because LASIK is 5 times safer than wearing contacts. We recommend parents share these tips with their children, as many times teenagers and young adults don’t make their health, especially their vision health a priority. “As a father of four, I value instilling important health tips for my children to follow and to pass along to their children,” says Dr. Shofner.
For those that experience sudden change in their vision, we recommend calling your local eye doctor or Shofner Vision Center to schedule an eye exam. We only have one set of eyes, it’s important to protect them now and throughout our lives.
