Shwoplifters Hit Portland Targeting Clothing, Shoes and Accessories for the Whole Family
Portland, OR (PRWEB) August 08, 2013 -- Shwop started over a year ago in a small Portland location where it tested out membership-based swapping with women’s clothing, shoes and accessories. Participants pay a membership fee and swap items they no longer wear or never did. “It’s so simple and just makes sense,” says owner Marci Pelletier. “So many people have items in their closet and jewelry boxes that never see the light of day. As long as you are paying your membership fee, you can swap for items you love, that fit great, and you will wear.”
Since recently relocating to a bigger location on 24th & SE Powell, Shwop now has clothing and shoes for men and kids and their members love it. “The kids are so fun to watch. I call them my Super Shwoppers,” says Pelletier. “As long as a parent is okay with an item, they can get it. No cost or price discussion since they are already members and swapping their own clothing. They definitely get it at an early age.” The new location has its own parking and is right on the bus line. Since it’s on Powell, it’s easy to access for shwoplifters from all over Portland area.
The rules at Shwop are different from clothing consignment stores because Pelletier believes getting rid of your used clothing should be easy. “People like easy. Put it in a bag and bring it in,” says Pelletier. Not all items need to be in season or from a certain brand and you don’t have to make an appointment to drop off your clothing. Shwop sorts items and makes sure things are clean, not torn or stained before they go on the floor. And they are receiving and getting new clothes out every day.
The community service aspect of the store is still going strong and growing as the store grows. Shwop and its members just raised money through an auction to provide socks for those living outside.
