Succeed Management Solutions, LLC has released a new Silica Exposure Prevention training course that incorporates the recent OSHA regulation updates. The new standard requires a written exposure control plan, modified housekeeping practices, medical exams, and additional air sampling and control measures.

Crystalline silica causes numerous diseases including silicosis, cancer, and other pulmonary diseases that permanently damage the deepest areas of the lung, and accordingly is receiving increased regulatory scrutiny. It is crucial to equip employees with the safeguards and knowledge necessary to avoid silica exposure and remain healthy.

A tile and granite company in Vancouver, WA was recently fined more than $250,000 for failing to protect employees from silica dust exposure and other health hazards associated with stone slab grinding. The Washington Department of Labor & Industries cited the company after finding that employees were exposed to silica quartz dust that was more than three times the permissible limit. They were cited for seven “failure to abate” serious violations. One of the violations was due to the company failing to equip employees with proper personal protective equipment, in order to protect them from inhaling silica dust (from EHS Today, 12/28/2015).

Succeed’s Silica Exposure Prevention training course is designed to educate employers and workers about the health risks associated with silica dust and the necessary procedures to keep employees safe. The course describes the different types of silica, sources of silica exposure, potential health effects, the newest OSHA regulations, and appropriate hazard assessment and monitoring procedures and controls.

As with all Succeed courses, this training can be assigned to employees via Training Track™, an application that is designed to automate all aspects of an employee training program. Training Track™ is one of the available applications in Succeed’s web-based Risk Management Center. The Risk Management Center also contains other OSHA-required programs, training materials, and integrated software solutions.
