Vulnerability, intimacy, and trust is implicit and necessary in tango and in love. But they don’t always extend beyond the dance floor.

Simone M. Richards’ debut novel, “Midnight Playground: Where the Soul Plays” (published by Archway Publishing), follows a man and woman bound by their shared passion for tango and yearning for true love.
After sharing an intimate evening of Argentine tango, Tony and Simone find themselves continually drawn back to one another. “Readers feel the captivating rhythm of the dance of life,” says Richards.
But not every dance has a graceful end. When Simone’s former love re-enters her life, she is left feeling vulnerable. Meanwhile, Tony faces a secret obstacle of his own. The narrative explores themes surrounding the impossibility of truly knowing another person – and the facades people maintain either to protect their private emotions or to deceive another out of fear of rejection.
“Vulnerability, intimacy, and trust is implicit and necessary in tango and in love. But they don’t always extend beyond the dance floor,” says Richards. “Why is it so easy for people to give themselves over in a tango, but not in life? There’s no way to really know what’s going on in someone’s life or in their head based on the impression they give or the dance you shared.”
An excerpt from “Midnight Playground”:
He moved her gracefully and rhythmically around the dance floor. She closed her eyes and rested her head on his chest. He took small pauses during the songs and very slightly moved back and forth, her body followed instinctively and naturally. She felt the hem of her black skirt brush across her outstretched leg. Her mind was freed from all thought as they held each other, and her body reacted to his. She pressed her hand more firmly on his shoulder blade, he held her tighter. She didn't know where she ended and he began.
