Kay Chapman’s debut novel, “Sit-Down Money” (published by Balboa Press AU), tells the story of one woman’s experiential journey as she immerses herself into a new culture, reconnects with her past, finds love and ultimately discovers herself in the process.

It is 1987 when Gina Atkins leaves her teenage daughter behind and travels from Melbourne to Lumbarta Island to fulfill her life purpose. As Gina departs the airplane, she attempts to steel herself against her rising anxiety and muster some of the courage that has forsaken her. After the pilot bids her farewell, she is left alone to pursue her dream of being a remote area nurse in an aboriginal community.

Chapman, who worked as a nurse and midwife in remote Australia for three years, took inspiration from her own experiences, lending authenticity to Gina’s narrative. Chapman says, “People in remote Australia continue to live in remote communities. Many indigenous people continue to lack services, motivation and incentives.”

Although at its core “Sit-Down Money” is a story of love and self-transformation, Chapman hopes Gina’s involvement with an indigenous community will help readers to understand that “we still have a long way to go to live equitably and respectfully alongside our indigenous peoples.”
