Although many ski resorts and ski accommodation providers in Europe were hard hit during the financial crisis, things might be starting to look brighter again as leading holiday rentals website AlphaHolidayLettings.com reports an increase of 7% in enquiries and rental bookings compared with same period last year. Enquiries for luxury ski chalets and apartments at locations such as Courchevel, Meribel and Chamonix in France saw the biggest increase of all at almost 10%.
“We are seeing higher demand for skiing holidays across Europe this year”, says Tom Lei at Alpha Holiday Lettings. “People are still looking for good deals, but there is definitely more interest generally speaking. We also started receiving enquiries earlier compared with last year. The improved economic outlook in Europe has definitely helped”. Other ski destinations including Zermatt in Switzerland and the more affordable Bansko in Bulgaria have also seen an elevated level of interest.
The encouraging news will come as a relief, particularly with those who rent out their ski apartments or chalets during the ski season. For instance, well-presented two bedroom apartments in Chamonix at good locations could generate as much as €2,000 rental income per week during peak season. Although as suggested people are returning to the pistes, many are looking to find the best deal they can get. Staying in self-catering accommodation at ski resorts is not only a flexible option, it could also work out much cheaper for families and larger groups. For owners of ski accommodation and vacation rentals, this could be the best season in a number of years.
