Torrance Sleep Apnea Doctor, Paul Kim DDS, Now Offers Home Sleep Apnea Tests
Torrance, CA (PRWEB) February 02, 2016 -- Dr. Paul Kim, expert in sleep apnea in Torrance, is now offering at-home sleep apnea tests. Sleep apnea is a common but serious sleep disorder that can interfere with healthy sleeping patterns. It occurs when the airway becomes obstructed, leaving the sufferer unable to breathe, and then the brain awakens and reopens the airway. The brain can be roused from sleep hundreds of times a night, leaving sufferers tired, irritable and out-of-sorts. The decreased oxygen levels in the body create a different kind of stress, which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, depression, obesity, type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems.
The first step towards relief is getting a proper diagnosis. A physical exam and symptom diary can both be helpful, but to determine the full extent of the problem and type of apnea, such as obstructive sleep apnea or central sleep apnea, a sleep apnea test is needed. These tests have traditionally been used at a sleep apnea center, but Dr. Kim is proud to be able to offer in-home testing. In-home tests allow you to be diagnosed in the comfort of your own home. As with sleep center tests, in-home sleep apnea tests use sensors and other equipment to monitor sleeping patterns. Patients will maintain their typical routine as much as possible and can remove the sensors in the morning. The device will then be returned to the center for data interpretation.
After diagnosis, treatments may be recommended. Common sleep apnea treatments include:
• Lifestyle changes to reduce external risk factors
• Sleep apnea oral appliances
• Sleep apnea machines
• Surgery
