With cheaper running costs being a high priority amongst motorists, more economical and affordable small cars are being introduced to the market.

City cars and superminis, as they have been named by manufacturers, are generally very good cars; and for newly qualified and young drivers, they also come with very low running costs. But with so many models to choose from, it can be difficult to select the right one.

Using data from a combination of sources, including 'What Car?', Tiger.co.uk has looked at ten of the most popular small cars available on the market in the UK to see which delivers the most economical drive based on the overall combination of emissions, cost of insurance, tax band, fuel economy and, of course, how much the car itself will set you back. Top of the table is the Citroen C1.
