Elite Email’s 2013 Top 50 Celebrities With Serious Social Media Power
Toronto, ON (PRWEB) September 03, 2013 -- The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is around the corner and Elite Email a world leader in digital marketing tools for small to medium-sized businesses, has ranked the celebrities with the most social media power in 2013.
"The ranking shows how the role of celebrity has changed in terms of influence, demonstrating that 'virtual hype' is where it's at," says CEO Robert Burko of Elite Email. The list was produced in an effort to show the effectiveness of social media in bringing people and brands to life, building product awareness, and ultimately helping businesses grow. Celebrities are brands in and of themselves. Those who are tapped into social media channels recognize the power of being able to connect with their fans on a more personal level.
Elite Email, known for its email marketing services, has recently released an easy-to-use mobile marketing tool, and is about to launch a new 'social page builder' tool that will allow customers (small to medium-sized businesses) to integrate their digital marketing strategy across all three channels.
"Using social media to help build a brand is nothing new, but small businesses are not equipped with the resources that larger organizations - and celebrities - have to do it right," asserts Mr. Burko. "The Elite Facebook Page Builder and Elite Landing Page Builder will allow businesses to brand themselves on the page through fully customized tabs, drag-and-drop features and hundreds of design templates, ultimately enhancing user engagement." Elite Email is the only company in Canada offering this technology as an integrated suite with its other emarketing tools.
The Top 10
Pop music stars tend to have the largest following according to Elite Email's research, which includes several A-Listers set to appear at TIFF. It is no coincidence this list also reflects some of the performers at this week's MTV Video Awards. Below are the top ten celebrities ranked by overall score. To view the entire list including specific social network details, visit http://www.eliteemail.com/celebrity-social-media-rankings/.
(1) Justin Bieber 110,686,738
(2) Lady Gaga 100,427,701
(3) Katy Perr 99,370,780
(4) Shakira 92,000,057
(5) Eminem 90,822,919
(6) Taylor Swift 85,924,812
(7) Cristiano Ronaldo 82,634,500
(8) Selena Gomez 65,908,061
(9) Britney Spears 61,635,490
(10)Avril Lavigne 57,583,026
"Whether we like it or not 'Bieber Fever' is still in effect. Justin's the only Canadian celebrity with any real presence. He has the highest social media scorecard with nearly 110 million followers spanning Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. There is no doubt that social media has played a role in his fame." Some of these celebrities are gaining millions of fans daily, like Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and Jusin Bieber. Meanwhile Mike Myers, set to make his directorial debut at TIFF, doesn't appear to be online at all, although his famous Austin Powers character, Dr. Evil, has almost 15,000 followers on Twitter through an unverified account (@FrickinDrEvil).
While the data set skews younger, the stars with the biggest followings are within ages 19 to 40 years old. The older ones have little to no presence at all with the exception of Ellen DeGeneres (age 55) and Tom Hanks (age 57) who were notably amongst the top twenty-five.
Burko also notes how surprising it is that some of the most "traditionally" well-known celebrities do not even have a website, pointing a finger at their agents for the missed opportunities. One Direction's documentary Director, Morgan Spurlock, mentioned the band is a "machine" and it's all about "visibility" recently on the Piers Morgan Tonight show on CNN. The band ranks #15 on the list but is quickly gaining traction. Miley Cyrus is also up there at #13, especially post-"twerking".
Data Collection Procedure
Elite Email researchers scoured social networks in August 2013 looking for the most popular celebrities, these included actors, musicians and athletes. For the purposes of the top 50, the most popular social networks were used: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. The team began seeking out 'verified' profiles. There were countless fake profiles/general fan pages but only official pages were used in collecting this data wherever possible. All the data from Twitter came from verified Twitter accounts to ensure authenticity. The majority of Facebook pages (90%+) were also verified, however in some cases a verified page did not exist. In these scenarios, the Elite Email researchers conducted further auditing of all possible matches to determine if there was an official page and subsequently used the identified page. Since Instagram does not have verified accounts, the research team tried to find links from the aforementioned Facebook and Twitter pages to draw a direct connection to the Instagram profile. In absence of these direct links, they used their best analytical judgement to identify the authentic and official account. To report any errors, please contact our Support Team.
