Southwest Oral Surgery Announces Success of Peru Dentistry Mission
Glendale, Arizona (PRWEB) November 14, 2013 -- A team of dentistry professionals from the Southwest Oral Surgery in Glendale, Arizona, has recently returned from a visit to Peru in which they provided much needed dental services to the under-privileged.
Known for its oral, facial, wisdom tooth removal and dental implant surgery procedures (http://www.southwestimplants.com) the Southwest team became aware of the oral health issues being faced by the people of Cusco, Peru by ‘A Broader View’ (ABV), a non-denominational, non-profit organization.
Led by Dr. Robert Buch (http://www.southwestimplants.com/about-the-doctors/doctors/), and with the aid of Glendale dentist Dr. Edward Pardo, the pro-bono mission provided clinical care at the Hogar Clinica, San Juan De Dios, in Cusco.
On his return, Dr. Buch thanked the wider West Phoenix valley dental community for its support of the mission, the objective of which was to provide oral surgery and dentistry to some of the nation’s poorest people.
“Much of the dental and surgical supplies, toothbrushes and floss used in Cusco were donated by our colleagues in Arizona,” he explained. “Without this generosity and support, we would not have been able to deliver quality care and dental hygiene education to mothers and children who would otherwise go without.”
As well as attending the Hogar Clinica, the Southwest Oral Surgery team, along with Dr. Pardo, visited and offered dental care and education at local schools, a women’s shelter, and an orphanage.
“Most of the patients we treated at the Clinica were children 4-6 years of age, the majority of whom who had never received any previous dental care,” said Dr Buch. “So it is not surprising that they were in great need of immediate treatment, along with education to prevent future oral disease.”
The mission to Peru also benefited Dr Buch’s team, the dental professional revealed.
“Volunteering to help those less fortunate has its own rewards,” he said. “Our Southwest Oral Surgery team felt privileged to be able to provide dental care and oral hygiene education in an environment so very different to what we have here in Glendale Arizona.”
“Not only did the experience remind us of how fortunate we are in the health care services available to us in the United States, but it has inspired us to participate in other such pro bono work in the future.”
