Speedwell Design Center Announces October Is National Window Covering Safety Month
Morristown, NJ (PRWEB) October 18, 2016 -- Speedwell Design Center announces that October is Window Covering Safety month. All month long they and other official retailers of Hunter Douglas products will be focused on increasing customer awareness of the dangers associated with corded window coverings.
According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), loose window cords are among the top five unseen hazards in the average American home. Children are especially vulnerable to loops in cords and may become tangled or even choked by the dangling lines. Thankfully, the industry has responded by providing an array of improved products for purchase. Cordless window coverings and motorized window treatments eliminate the need for dangerous cords which, aside from presenting a hazard to children, can also be prone to frustrating entanglement. Reducing the amount of dangling line reduces the hazard while making it easier to manage the coverings. Look for the "Best for Kids™" label on products as a guarantee of quality that takes child safety into account.
For customers who are unable to replace their window covering, Speedwell Design Center also has tips for quick-fixes that will improve safety. Cribs and other sleeping areas for young children should be moved away from windowsills to prevent children from standing up in bed and playing with loose cords. In other rooms where it is impractical to move furniture away from window areas, customers can purchase inexpensive window cleats to wrap loose cords around. Tightly wound cords that are tied off at the end will be virtually out of reach for young children. While this is not as safe as a cordless covering, it is a good second-best option for a quick fix.
"Realistically, window covering safety is a concern for us 12 months out of the year," said Barry Kolsky, owner of Speedwell Design Center. "We always stress the importance of removing hazards for our customers who have children, but even if they don't, it's always a good idea to plan ahead for visitors. It's really gratifying to coordinate with other dealers across the country to raise public awareness of this very important issue."
