H3O Water Systems Recommends Winterizing Irrigation Systems
San Antonio, TX (PRWEB) January 14, 2014 -- Home irrigation systems are a true investment that can increase property value, help maintain a healthy lawn, and ultimately save you time and money. As with any investment, precautionary measures must be taken to ensure longevity. Although the local San Antonio area does not see as many intense, hard freezes as northern states, H3O Water Systems advises that irrigation systems still be winterized.
What many homeowners are unaware of is that a freeze lasting only a few hours can cause significant damage to an irrigation system. When water freezes, it expands and can cause pipes, bibs, and connectors to crack or burst.
The first step to prevent damage from occurring is to shut off the water supply to the system. The main valve must be below the frost line, inside a heated room, or somehow protected from the elements. If your home contains an automatic system, the timer will need to be shut off as well.
Since soil acts as a natural insulation, the water from underground pipes will not need to be removed. Any water in above-ground piping, however, will need to be drained. In addition, if there are gear-drive rotor sprinklers installed above the ground, the water will need to be drained from those, too.
Finally, remember to insulate backflow preventers and valves that are above ground. These can either be removed and stored in a warmer environment for safe keeping, or taped for insulation. If you choose to tape, be sure not to block any air vents or drain outlets.
